Project 02 / Vehicle dynamics / 2026 / Connected Fleets (MMS210)
Keeping a fire truck upright
Real driving data + a digital twin → 60 % less body roll.

↑ Lateral load transfer before vs after tuning

↑ The 1-DOF roll-plane model in Simulink

↑ The data logger in the test car — we logged with a passenger car because the fire service couldn't share fire-truck data
Roll simulator / try it
Roll now 0.00°
0 s— 4° limit6 s
Input: lane change at +3 m/s² for 1 s, then a steady 2.5 m/s² turn.
Spec sheet
The problem
Fire trucks are heavy with a high centre of gravity; sharp emergency manoeuvres cause body roll and rollover risk.
What I did
- 01Team of four. Logged real urban driving in Gothenburg with an in-cabin logger (accelerometer 50 Hz, GPS 1 Hz).
- 02Filtered lateral acceleration in Python, built a 1-DOF roll-plane model in MATLAB/Simulink.
- 03Tuned the suspension analytically instead of by guessing.
Result
Peak roll
4.7→0.0°
Body roll
0 %
Natural freq.
0.93→0.00 Hz
Damping ratio
0.25→0.00
Spring stiffness
254→0 kN/m
